Updates on November & December Registration Renewals

November registration renewals for Trailer and Vanity Plates were delayed, but have now all been mailed to customers. Trailer plate renewals no longer require an insurance certification stamp. December registration renewals for Heavy Use Vehicles require a paid Form 2290/Schedule 1 to be submitted and reviewed in order to renew. Quick Tip: If your customers have commercial plated vehicles that do NOT require the Form 2290/Schedule 1, advise them to renew those plates online separately, so they don’t get held up with the ones that have to be reviewed. Encourage customers to renew online.

November Renewals for Trailer and Vanity Plates

Customers should go to the  Online Service Center at www.mass.gov/rmv and select “Complete 40+ transactions” then “Renew My Registration.”

  • Individual customers will log into their myRMV profile account to renew the trailers and/or vanity plates.
  • Business customers will select “continue as a business” and will have to enter their business information.

 December Renewals for Heavy Use Vehicles

As a reminder, customers that have December Renewals for Heavy Use Vehicles must provide a paid Form 2290/Schedule 1 in order to renew those registrations. They can pay these fees online. Once paid, they will receive a paid receipt electronically, which can be uploaded and attached to their December registration renewal. If the customer mails in the Form 2290 to the IRS, they will have to wait for a paid receipt, and there is no telling how long that will take.

  • The Form 2290/Schedule 1 will have a stamp or watermark when it has been filed through an IRS-approved e-file provider and accepted for processing.

Reminder:  If you have customers with commercial plated vehicles that do NOT require the Form 2290/Schedule 1, make sure they do NOT include them with the vehicles that require the 2290. When the RMV receives the 2290 registrations for renewal, they have to review them before processing. If a plate that doesn’t require the 2290 is sent along with those that do, it will not be processed until the review is done.
